Tooth Extractions

Tooth extraction is sometimes necessary to resolve severe decay, infection, or overcrowding, or to prepare for another dental procedure. At Perry Smiles, we prioritize your comfort and safety, using the latest techniques to ensure a smooth and minimally painful extraction process.

The Tooth Extraction Process

At Perry Smiles, we want to help you keep all of your teeth. Even so, there are times when a tooth extraction is the best option for maintaining your oral health in the long term. Tooth extractions at Perry Smiles are typically a fast process. The most critical part of this process is recovery. To encourage a proper healing process, we need to control the bleeding immediately following the tooth extraction. We will have you bite down on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes after the extraction to form a blood clot. It is important to not disturb the blood clot for the next 24 hours. That means you should avoid sucking through straws or you risk developing a dry socket. For the swelling, we recommend placing an ice pack on the outer cheek. Once the swelling has decreased, a warm compress can be placed in the same area for comfort. You can also gently rinse your mouth with salt water to keep the extraction area clean.

  • How should I prepare for a tooth extraction?

Eat a light meal a few hours before your appointment if using local anesthesia only, avoid smoking, and make sure to follow any specific instructions provided by your dentist.

  • What should I expect after having a tooth extracted?

It’s normal to experience some swelling and mild discomfort, which can be managed with ice packs and medication. You should avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours to help the healing process.

  • How quickly will I recover from a tooth extraction?

Recovery typically takes a few days. We recommend soft foods and gentle care when cleaning around the extraction site to prevent irritation.
